NRF 2026 Recap:
Progress with Purpose in a People First Retail Era
The NRF 2026 was a clear reminder that retail transformation is not about technology for technology’s sake. Rather, it is about making progress with purpose, driven by passionate, determined, and dedicated retail professionals and accelerated by the right capabilities. Experiencing NRF both as a Kyndryl exhibitor and as an attendee walking the show floor and attending keynote sessions, several themes stood out that point to where the retail industry is headed next.
From the outset, it was clear that this year’s NRF was distinctly people-centric. The most meaningful moments were not found in product demonstrations or headlines, but in conversations. Reconnecting with longtime industry colleagues, meeting emerging leaders, and hearing retailers openly share how they are navigating complexity and uncertainty reinforced an important truth.
Strong cultures, trusted partnerships, and deliberate investments in talent and capabilities are powering the next phase of growth and transformation. Retailers are increasingly looking for partners who truly understand the realities of their business. They want partners who can unlock value, navigate change with them, and help move transformation from strategy to sustained execution.

A People-Centric Industry
The Store Remains the Heartbeat of Retail
One of the most inspiring moments of the week was hearing Ed Stack, Chairman of Dick’s Sporting Goods, remind the industry that stores remain the heartbeat of the business, where the arts and sciences of commerce truly meet. His reflections on innovation, community engagement, and culture reinforced that success comes from centering everything on the customer experience. With more than 80 percent of transactions still happening in physical locations, stores remain where brands are experienced, communities connect, and long-term relationships are built. The future of retail is not digital versus physical. It is how seamlessly those experiences come together to create relevance and value for customers.
From AI Experimentation to Execution
Looking Ahead
Technology, particularly Agentic AI capabilities, is increasingly viewed through a more practical, business outcome-driven lens. The conversations have clearly shifted over the past year, from experimentation to execution. When applied strategically, AI can accelerate decision-making, streamline operations, and unlock innovative ways to serve customers while empowering frontline employees. The focus is no longer on the art of the possible, but on what is meaningful and measurable for the business to help improve the customer and associate experiences at scale.
