Innovating for Value and Convenience in the Grocery Space

BJ’s Wholesale Club, a membership-only retail chain known for its bulk goods, has been quietly revolutionizing the grocery industry. With more than 7 million members and a footprint spanning 238 clubs across 19 states, BJ’s offers its customers significant savings on groceries and general merchandise. The retailer’s success stems from its unique blend of competitive pricing, technological innovation, and a strong focus on customer experience. BJ's stands out not just for the value it delivers, but also for its growing investments in omnichannel capabilities and digital transformation.

Membership is the cornerstone of BJ’s business model, offering two tiers: the Inner Circle membership at $55 per year and the Perks Rewards membership at $110, which includes benefits like 2% cash back and exclusive perks. A business version of each tier provides additional tax-exempt and resale privileges. As the company expanded its membership offerings, it achieved a 90% renewal rate in 2023, with higher-tier memberships surpassing 38% of its member base. CEO Bob Eddy emphasized, "We delivered strong increases in membership, traffic, and unit volumes, resulting in revenue growth and market share gains."

BJ’s has also integrated manufacturers’ coupons into its bulk offerings, an industry-unique feature that allows members to combine club discounts with additional savings. This value-driven approach has helped BJ’s maintain a loyal customer base even amid inflationary pressures. As Bob Eddy noted, "Our compelling value proposition is resonating with our members."

BJ’s has embraced technology to enhance the customer shopping experience. From in-club shopping to curbside pickup, the retailer has introduced various digital solutions to meet evolving consumer needs. One standout feature is ExpressPay, an app-based service that allows members to scan items as they shop, skip the checkout line, and pay directly through their smartphones. Additionally, BJ’s offers a digital coupon gallery, providing extra savings without the hassle of paper coupons.

BJ’s also uses its mobile app to enhance the in-store experience, guiding members to specific products and delivering personalized offers. In fact, members who shop digitally tend to spend 90% more than in-store-only shoppers, a statistic that highlights the success of BJ’s omnichannel strategy. The retailer plans to continue investing in these conveniences, expanding same-day delivery and in-app capabilities to provide even more value to its members.

We believe we’ve only scratched the surface in our digital efforts and will continue to augment our conveniences in areas such as same-day delivery, in-app capabilities, and personalization to deliver even more value to our members.

Leveraging Technology for Seamless Shopping

Strong Membership Growth and Value Proposition

BJ’s has also invested heavily in modernizing its order management and fulfillment systems. In 2023, the company transitioned its omnichannel inventory operations to a microservices-based order management system (OMS) through a partnership with Nextuple. The new system enables BJ’s to optimize fulfillment across various channels—whether in-store, curbside, or through same-day delivery—allowing for more flexibility and faster service.

The new OMS provides real-time visibility into inventory levels, ensuring that products are always in stock and available for members across all sales channels. This level of efficiency helps BJ’s meet customer demand more effectively and ensures a seamless shopping experience.

BJ’s digital growth has been nothing short of impressive. The company has posted double-digit growth in digitally enabled sales every quarter for the past two years. Its success is driven in part by the expansion of digital conveniences such as buy online, pick up in club, curbside pickup, and same-day delivery. Through a partnership with Roadie, a UPS company, BJ’s recently expanded same-day delivery for larger items like patio sets and electronics, making the one-stop shopping experience even more convenient for busy families.

As Monica Schwartz, EVP and Chief Digital Officer at BJ’s, noted, "With same-day delivery, we’re able to not only provide competitive everyday low prices, but we can save members time by delivering the order in just a few hours."

Private labels have been a key growth driver for BJ’s, with its in-house brands Wellsley Farms and Berkley Jensen now accounting for over 25% of the company’s business. BJ’s has made a concerted effort to expand these lines, particularly in categories like coffee and snacking nuts, which resonate with its value-conscious customer base.

In addition to delivering value through private labels, BJ’s has prioritized sustainability. The company has partnered with suppliers to ensure that products are responsibly sourced, reflecting its commitment to providing high-quality goods that align with customers’ values. “They want the best quality products, but they want responsibly sourced products,” said Bob Eddy.

Omnichannel Fulfillment Powered by Microservices

Expanding Digital Capabilities and Same-Day Delivery

Leading with Private Labels and Sustainable Practices

BJ’s has no plans to slow down. The company’s real estate pipeline is the strongest it’s been in 20 years, with plans to open 12 new clubs and 15 gas stations in 2024. The retailer is also continuing to develop its smaller-format concept, BJ’s Market, which offers a quicker, more efficient shopping experience tailored to urban consumers. This concept has shown year-over-year growth since its introduction, further validating BJ’s strategic vision.

As BJ’s continues to expand its digital and physical footprint, the retailer remains laser-focused on delivering value, convenience, and innovation. With investments in AI, omnichannel fulfillment, and private label growth, BJ’s is well-positioned to capture an even larger share of the grocery market in the years to come.

BJ’s Wholesale Club stands out in the competitive grocery sector due to its commitment to value, technological innovation, and customer-centric solutions. From AI-driven inventory management to seamless omnichannel experiences, BJ’s is continually finding new ways to deliver convenience and savings to its members. As the company expands its digital capabilities and opens more clubs, it will undoubtedly remain a leader in the grocery space, offering unmatched value for consumers seeking both affordability and quality.
